Reading This week in reading to support our poetry writing unit we read many different poems together. We noticed how poets structure their writing, and how poets use comparisons, onomatopoeia, and beautiful descriptions to help their reader visualize what they're writing about. Next week we will look at more poems and discuss how poets use personification, alliteration, and repetition in their poems. Writing This week in writing we continued using comparisons in our own poems. We talked about how we could take one comparison and stretch it out for an entire poem. We also talked about a few different kinds of poems: conversation poems, list poems, and story poems. Next week we will talk about mask poems before wrapping up our unit with our Poetry Slam next Friday. I will send out a reminder email, but encourage your student to wear their best "moody poet" outfit (i.e. all black and a beret if they have one) next Friday! Math This week in math we wrapped up Module 4. I will be sending those tests home next week once all the students in the class have taken it. We are now onto Module 6 (we will loop back to Module 5), which sets the foundation for multiplication and division. With this unit we start small (putting objects into equal groups), so that students have true understanding of these important concepts! Social Studies This week in social studies students decided what goods and services their business is going to offer. They also had to think about where they would get their goods from, and if they have services- who would offer those services. Then they created a sign to go in front of their businesses that advertises their goods and/or services. Pictures of our business community can be found on SeeSaw! Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leaders of the week is Colton! Way to go, Colton! Have a wonderful weekend! Testing This week we had the first portion of our testing for the Issaquah District's Highly Capable Program! The final portion of testing will be in March. We tested Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning this week. I was so impressed by the students' perseverance and persistence during these challenging assessments. They had such a great attitude all week, they have quite a lot to be proud of! Math This week in math we reinforced what we've been learning about adding and subtracting using vertical form and the chip model. They're practically pros now! We will be wrapping up this module next week. Another highlight this week for many students was playing the game "Let's Make a Pizza" which introduced them to multiplication. This is a game you can play at home with your student, you just need dice and some paper. Partner 1 rolls the dice which determines their number of pizzas. Partner 1 then rolls again and that roll determines the number of pepperonis that will go on each pizza. Partner 2 then rolls their dice and makes their pizzas. When we played in class, I had the students write their number sentence using multiplication under the first pizza from their roll. The game ends when one person has 8 pizzas, and the person who has the most pepperonis altogether is the winner! Social Studies This week in Social Studies we talked about the differences between goods and services. We also talked about how each business has costs and sales, and how in order to make a profit their sales need to be higher than their costs. Next week students will choose which goods and services their own business will offer, and will think of ways to market them. Second Step (Social and Emotional Curriculum) This week in Second Step we wrapped up our unit on Empathy with a lesson on Compassion. We talked about how compassion is where we put our empathy into action! This week we also started our new unit on managing emotions and using calm down strategies. We will dive further into this unit this month, and students will learn strategies for what to do when they're feeling a lot of emotions. Soaring Eagle Corner This week's Leader of the Week is Isaiah! Way to go, Isaiah! Have a great weekend! Reading This week in reading we wrapped up our unit on Wondering. We read the book, The Paper Crane, and students asked important questions about the text before, during, and after reading. Writing This week in writing we continued working on writing like poets. We talked about how poets choose topics that give them big feelings, and write about those. We again discussed the importance of using line breaks and looked at a few different kind of poems: free verse, acrostic, and haiku. Math This week in math students learned how to solve addition problems with more than two addends. While we've been using the chip model and vertical form heavily in this unit, students used a combination of number bonds with number sentences, an open number line, or the arrow to solve these challenging problems. Social Studies This week in Social Studies students finalized the layout of our business community which will be the setting for our new Social Studies unit. The class decided they wanted to have a river running through a middle of the city with a road going along each bank. Additionally, since two students decided they wanted to run a train depot for the town, the class decided our business community needed train tracks as well. If you're in the school over the next month be sure to check out the community on the bulletin board outside our class! I'll be posting a picture of it to SeeSaw as well. Un-Homework I'm currently working on revamping the Un-Homework menu. Un-Homework will relaunch in February, and will allow extended time for students to complete activities and will have more activities that include work on other subjects (in addition to reading and math) such as writing and spelling. Highly Capable (IOWA and TTCT) Testing January 15th-18th we will have our testing for the Issaquah District's Highly Capable Program. All 2nd graders in the Issaquah District will take these tests to see if they qualify for the program. There is no prep your student needs to do for these tests, please just make sure they arrive on time each day of testing and with a belly full of brain food! Have a great week! Reading This week in reading we started our unit on wondering using fiction books. We read two phenomenal books, The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau and The Ghost Eye Tree. Students practiced activating their schema to ask meaningful questions and make predictions about the text. Next week we will continue working with wondering. Writing This week in writing we launched our new writing unit: poetry! Students learned that in order to write poetry, they have to first look at the world through poet's eyes. Students practiced using their poet's eyes to look at ordinary things in our classroom like a pair of scissors, and see them instead as an alligator, a butterfly, or even a ballerina! We also talked about how poets use line breaks to help add rhythm or music to their writing. Next week we will continue studying poems and incorporate what we learn into our own writing. Math This week in math we continued working with using the chip model and vertical form with subtraction. We also used mental math to solve simple equations to help us work with bigger numbers where the numbers remain the same, but the units are different (i.e. 2 ones + 8 ones to help solve 2 tens + 8 tens). This will help students as we go further into this module and the numbers students add and subtract become larger. Social Studies This week we launched our new social studies unit where students will design, create, and operate a business community. To begin the unit, we discussed what businesses one might find in a business community and what other things the community would need to run (roads, crosswalks, etc.). Next week students will get to choose and create a business with a partner. Un-Homework I'm currently working on revamping the Un-Homework menu. Un-Homework will launch either next week or the week after, but will allow more time for students to complete activities and will have more activities that include work on other subjects (in addition to reading and math) such as writing and spelling. Highly Capable (IOWA and TTCT) Testing January 15th-18th we will have our testing for the Issaquah District's Highly Capable Program.
