Poetry This week in poetry we learned about onomatopoeia, alliteration, and personification. We also noticed how poets make comparisons using similes or metaphors that stretch out through their entire poem. We wrapped up our poetry unit with our Poetry Slam yesterday! Videos of your student reading their poem can be found on SeeSaw. Math This week in math we wrapped up the first part of our unit on addition. We learned two other strategies for addition: the arrow way and expanded notation. When we return from break we will learn how to use the chip model and vertical form with subtraction. Your student can continue to get lots of practice with the chip model/vertical form for addition with their Optional Homework packet! Science This week in science we wrapped up our unit on ecosystems. We learned how ecosystems change- either gradually or rapidly. We talked about many different ways that ecosystems change. Some things that cause changes we discussed were volcanoes, deforestation, and erosion as well as many others. To see the rest you can take a peek at the Life Science Notebook your student brought home. HICAP Testing Shortly after we get back from break we will begin our testing for the Issaquah School District's Merlin and SAGE programs. All 2nd graders in the district are assessed, unless an opt-out form is submitted. We will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CoGAT) and Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) January 14th-17th. The tests will be given in the morning and are timed. We will practice test taking skills (how to bubble an answer sheet, answering multiple choice questions, etc.) the week before. If your student is going to be assessed, please make sure they come to school each day well rested and ready to test their best! We will not have any AM volunteers that week. January/February Sharing Packet The January/February Sharing packet was sent home today. The first week back from break will be free choice sharing- students can bring in anything that isn't a toy or stuffie and should be prepared to share about it. Have a wonderful holiday break! For everyone traveling, I hope you travel safely and for those of you sticking around, I hope your break is restful! - Miss Sonneland Dates to Know: December 21st-January 5th: Winter Break January 6th: School Resumes January 9th: Eagle Reader January 10th: Popcorn Friday January 14th-January 17th: CoGAT/TTCT Testing 9:30-11:00 AM

Field Trips! We had such an incredible time this Friday at the Pacific Science Center. We started our day by watching Hidden Pacific in the IMAX theater and learning about the ecosystems of the atolls in the Pacific. Students then got to explore the Science Center with their groups visiting the super cool (and apparently scary?!) butterfly room, learning about our bodies, the solar system, and even getting to spend time making and creating rockets in the Tinker Room! Thank you SO much to all of our amazing chaperones for helping this trip run so smoothly. Poetry This week in poetry we learned how poets write about things that mean a lot to them or give them a big feeling. We learned how poets can add meaning to their poems by creating a picture in their reader's mind, using repetition to add emphasis, showing not telling, and using honest precise words. While this is a quick unit, I've been so impressed by the students' enthusiasm for poetry writing and their willingness to try new things! Math This week in math we continued working on becoming experts in using the vertical form algorithm and the chip model to add bigger and bigger numbers. Next week we will learn some other strategies for addition. When we get back from break we will launch in subtraction. December Optional Homework Packet December's Optional Homework Packet will be heading home with students on Monday, December 16th. Students will have winter break to work on it, so it will not be due until school resumes on Monday, January 6th. Reading & Writing Last week in Reading and Writing we officially started our poetry unit! In reading we will look at various poems and learn the fundamentals of poetry. In writing, students will get to channel their poetic knowledge into writing their very own poems! Math Last week in math we continued working with using the chip model and vertical form algorithm for addition. We began using these strategies to add bigger numbers, now adding with 3 digit numbers. Pacific Science Center Field Trip This Friday, December 13th is our all day field trip to the Pacific Science Center! Please make sure your student arrives on time on Friday as we will be leaving promptly. Additionally, please make sure to pack them a sack lunch and a snack to eat there. As a reminder, if you are chaperoning and driving your own car you will still need to leave with us from the school in the morning. Chaperones, your field trip fees will be posted to your student's account this week. Class Reward At the beginning of the year our class set a goal to earn 2,000 points for Optional Homework. We met our goal last week, and so we will be having our PJ/Stuffie/Blanket/Movie/Ice Cream Party on Thursday, December 12th. If anyone would be able to send in a tub of ice cream for our party please let me know. December Optional Homework Packet December's Optional Homework Packet will be heading home with students on Friday, December 13th. Students will have winter break to work on it, so it will not be due until school resumes on Monday, January 6th.
