Reading & Writing This week we launched our Fractured Fairy Tales Unit! We kicked off our unit by identifying the main elements of all traditional fairy tales (good vs. evil, 3's and 7's, morals/lessons, etc). As a class we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The next day we decided to fracture the tale by changing the setting to underwater. The story then became the Three Billy Fish Gruff. We will be reading many fairy tales this unit, and noticing the structure and elements of fairy tales in reading will help us figure out how we might structure our own fractured fairy tale. Next week students will really dive into writing their own fractured tale. Math This week in math we focused primarily on using the chip model and vertical form with subtraction. Decomposing a ten and/or a hundred can be a difficult concept to understand (and especially showing those changes in vertical form), so any additional practice you can do with your student at home is strongly encouraged! Social Studies Our Social Studies unit is also connected with our fairy tale unit. In Social Studies we will be reading many versions of Cinderella from around the world. Cinderella's read this week: James Marshall's Cinderella (U.S.), Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters (Zimbabwe), Cinderella: The Glass Slipper (France), and Yeh-Shen (China). Upcoming Events Next week we will be having our Scholastic Book Fair. We will go down as a class on Monday so students can purchase books or make a wish list. Our class earned their 1,000 points for completing their Un-Homework assignments and have earned their Ice Cream/PJ/Stuffie/Movie day. We'll be having this next Friday, April 5th. Our out of school field trip to the Carco Theater on April 19th is quickly approaching! Field Trip permission forms were sent home today. Forms need to be back in by Friday, April 5th. We have 6 chaperone spots available for this field trip. If you are interested in chaperoning please send your form in (the first and second page) by this Monday, April 1st. Reading This week in reading we worked on finding the main idea the main idea of a text. We read quite a few different interesting articles (about sharks, elephants that paint, and roller coasters), and students had to think critically to figure out what the most important idea of the article was. Writing This week in writing we wrapped up our opinion writing unit with our Opinion Picnic! Students shared their most persuasive letters with students from Mrs. Friend's, Ms. Warner's, and Ms. McCaig's room. Pictures on SeeSaw to come! Math This week in math we revisited many students' favorite strategy for adding and subtracting: chip model and vertical form! Module 5 builds on concepts learned from Module 4 and I've been so impressed by how much the students have remembered. Social Studies To close out the unit this week, students had to solve a problem in our community: teenagers loitering and littering in the business community (oh my)! We held a community meeting and had a discussion about how whatever solution we came up with needed to respect the rights of the business owners and the teenagers. In the end, we came up with a multi-step solution: recycle bins and garbage bins in front of every business, a flyer that would educate people about why they should recycle, a recycling car for the train that could collect materials, and a special teen hangout in our community! Stem Night Follow-Up Thank you to everyone that made it to our STEM/Family Engineering Night on March 8. It was wonderful to see so many families all engaged in hands on learning at our school. A huge thank you to the staff and volunteers that made this event possible. Please take a few moments and fill out this survey so we can hear your thoughts about the event and make it even better! https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=8nAYNexOdUyAWk20-BGuoQs8VYrN5dRKm4gzCXZP5X9UMEhMRUs3REs0UjFaVlhPUUowUEVQWUxFWC4u Soaring Eagle Corner Our Leader of the Week this week is Elijah, way to go Elijah! Reading This week in reading we read about Tomie DePaolo. Students practiced their wondering skills by asking themselves what would happen next, and thinking about which part of the autobiography most surprised them. Next week we will continue strengthening our inferring skills. Writing This week in writing we continued writing persuasive opinion letters about our favorite books. This week we learned how we can use words like good, better, or best to draw comparisons between books to strengthen our opinion. Next week we will wrap up our unit with our writing celebration on Friday, March 22nd. Math This week in math we started Module 5. Module 5 builds on what students learned in Module 4 (strategies for addition and subtraction) and gets students working with larger numbers. We've been working with arrow way this week, next week we will go back to previous strategies like chip model + vertical form. Keyboarding Without Tears This week students got to try out Keyboarding Without Tears in class. This is a great free resource students have access to (in school and out of school) through their Clever account. Keyboarding Without Tears teaches students how to type, and helps students prepare for the SBA where they will be required to do quite a bit of typing. Soaring Eagle Corner Our Leader of the Week this week is Hans, way to go Hans! Reading This week in reading we focused our attention on two books: The Tale of Peter Rabbit and a biography about Beatrix Potter herself. Students enjoyed the precise language Beatrice used in her own writing, as well as her intricate pictures. We then learned about her and how she got the idea for Peter Rabbit and about the very different time she grew up in by reading her biography. Writing This week in writing we continued strengthening our opinion letters by focusing on the structure of our writing. We talked extensively about how a solid opinion letter starts with an interesting beginning, clearly states the writer's opinion, and is supported by at least 3 reasons with examples for each reason, and ends with a conclusion that restates the writer's opinion. Math This week in math we finished up Module 6. We learned how to tell the difference between even and odd numbers, and learned the rules for addition of odd and even numbers (i.e. an odd + an even always = an odd, etc). We had our Module 6 assessment today, and I will send the assessments home once all the students have completed it. Next week we will start Module 5. Social Studies This week in social studies we found out that our business community "wasn't getting enough customers". We held a community meeting, and students brainstormed ways we could get more customers to come to our businesses. After lots of good discussion, students decided to run an ad campaign to tell customers about their sales, discounts, and/or new products. Students decided between making a billboard, coupons/sale flyers, or a commercial for their ad campaign. If your at STEM night tonight be sure to check out all the new billboards along our community's railroad track! STEM Night Maple Hill's STEM night is TONIGHT, March 8th at 6PM. There will be many exciting and engaging activities for families to do together. We're very excited to have the Museum of Flight at our STEM night this year as well! Soaring Eagle Corner Our Leader of the Week this week is Markus, way to go Markus! Extra Snacks I try to keep extra snacks in the class in case students forget/don't have a snack for the morning, if you are able to send in extra snacks for our room it'd be greatly appreciated! Reading This week in reading we wrapped up our unit on Author's Purpose. We've discussed how there are 3 main reasons authors write- to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. We've looked at many different texts and students have done a great job analyzing which category (persuade, inform, entertain) each text falls into. When reading with your student at home, a great question to ask them is, "Why do you think the author wrote this book?" Writing This week in writing we've continued working on writing letters convincing others to read our favorite books. Students are encouraged to bring in their favorite books from home to write about during writing time (if we don't have them in our classroom library). We will continue working on stretching out our opinions and writing stronger, longer, and more convincing letters. Math This week in math we continued strengthening our understanding of arrays and recognizing rows and columns. Next week we will wrap up Module 6 by learning about odd and even numbers. After Module 6 we will go back to Module 5 and students will continue working on adding and subtracting using the chip model, vertical form, and the arrow way to solve problems. Optional Un-Homework I was SO impressed by how many students turned in their February Un-Homework packets! Many students mentioned they had completed an activity for February, but forgot to bring it in this week. If this was the case for your student, they can turn it in on Monday and receive half the points. March Un-Homework packets have now been sent out. I made a small error on the front page and forgot to include Week 1 in the list of activities. All total, this month's packet is 110 points. Homework is still 100% optional, the "points" earned are for student selected personal/class rewards. STEM Night Maple Hill's STEM night is next Friday, March 8th at 6PM. There will be many exciting and engaging activities for families to do together. We're very excited to have the Museum of Flight at our STEM night this year as well! CoGAT Testing Next week we will be wrapping up our testing for ISD's Highly Capable Program. We will be testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. Please make sure your students gets lots of rest, eats a nutritious breakfast, and arrives to school on time each day. Soaring Eagle Corner Our Leader of the Week this week is Hans, way to go Hans! Extra Snacks I try to keep extra snacks in the class in case students forget/don't have a snack for the morning, if you are able to send in extra snacks for our room it'd be greatly appreciated!
