Reading This week in reading we learned all the different things we can write on a Stop and Jot. We introduced Stop and Jots a few weeks ago, but a Stop and Jot is where students stop and think about what they're reading, and then jot their thought on a sticky note and put it in the book. We talked about how readers can stop and jot about what they're wondering, connections they've made to other books or to something that's happened in their life, something they found interesting and more. Writing This week in writing students worked hard on editing, revising, and finishing up their small moment stories! We learned how good writers reread their work not just to fix mistakes and make it sound better, but also to go back in and add more meaning to their story. We had SUCH a fun time celebrating the end of our Small Moment writing unit with Camp Share-A-Story. Check SeeSaw to see a video of your student reading their story. Math This week in Math we practiced counting using $1, $10, and $100. Students also learned how to count using an open number line. Next week we will start using place value disks in a place value chart to represent numbers which will set the groundwork for when we begin to add and subtract with larger numbers. Social Studies This week in Social Studies we officially began working on our mural! We divided the mural into different sections, and students are now working on their portion of the mural. Hopefully we will be able to put it all together sometime next week. Scholastic Book Orders The last day to make a Scholastic Book Order this month is Wednesday, October 30th. You can order online at scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our class code is RKNZP. September/October Leaders of the Week Each week the student who has the most soaring eagles is our Leader of the Week. They get their name put on a special poster, get special privileges for the week, and will get to participate in a special raffle for leader's of the week. Our Leaders of the Week for September and October were: Ryker, Evan, Lilly, Ollie, Christian, Josie, and Luna! Way to go to these stellar students! Auction Art Project If you are interested in helping create our class art project for the Maple Hills Auction please let me know. The auction will held in March, so there’s plenty of time to imagine and create the art. For those who have attended in the past, you know that each class enters an art piece that will be sold to the highest bidder. It’s a really fun portion of the evening and a great way to help raise funds for our PTA programs. Harvest Party Our Harvest Party will be on Thursday, October 31st from 12:25-1:25. Thanks so much to all of you who have already signed up to bring in supplies and/or help run stations for the party. It's greatly appreciated! There are still a few more spots to sign up to send in supplies or help with the party if you're available. Please note: younger siblings cannot attend the party, sorry! Reading Last week in reading we learned how author's have intention when it comes to their writing. We read Those Darn Squirrels and Mercy Watson to the Rescue and paid close attention to the parts of the stories that were powerful or made us react, and how the authors made them powerful. Writing Last week in writing we learned how good writers use quotation marks to make their characters come to life. We also practiced use meaningful craft moves to make our stories stronger. Math Last week in Math we learned how to write numbers in standard form, word form, unit form, and expanded form. These forms help students have a better understanding of place value and the significance of numbers and their values. Social Studies Last week in social studies we decided on the design for our recycled materials mural. We will be collecting bottle caps, bottles, used paper, milk cartons, used paint, old/dried out markers, and cardboard to use for our mural. If you have any of these in your recycle bin, send them in with your student this week in a recyclable bag and we will use them as materials for our project! Scholastic Book Orders The last day to make a Scholastic Book Order this month is Wednesday, October 30th. You can order online at scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our class code is RKNZP. Student Council Applications Student council applications are due THIS Friday, October 25th. We will have our class elections the following week. Games/Tournaments/Performances I LOVE coming to students' games/tournaments/performances. If your student would like me to attend, please send me the location, date, and time of their activity via email or send in their monthly schedule. I try to make it to at least one activity for every student that invites me! Unity Day October is anti-bullying month. The National Bullying Prevention Center puts on an event each year called Unity Day. For this event, they encourage all staff and students to come together against bullying and unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. This year unity day is October 23rd. As part of unity day, people across the nation wear orange to send a message of hope and support that no child should ever experience bullying. We are asking that MH participates in this event by advertising to students and staff to wear orange on October 23rd. Check out the website https://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unity-day.asp for more information. Harvest Party Our Harvest Party will be on Thursday, October 31st from 12:25-1:25. Reading This week in reading we learned strategies for figuring out tricky words. We talked about how good readers check the picture and what's happening in the story and ask, "What would make sense here?", they look for words inside a word and vowel teams they know, and look through the whole word part by part. Good readers also ask "Does that sound right, does that make sense?" and if not, they go back and reread! Writing This week in writing we learned investigated what makes Jane Yolen's writing so powerful, and then tried to try it out in our own writing. We noticed how she made lots of comparisons, described things using her senses, and how she built up suspense by having the most exciting part of the story come at the end. We also learned the difference between similes and metaphors. Math This week in math we wrapped up Module 2 and started Module 3. The first part of the module is all about forming base ten units of ten, a hundred, and a thousand. This week we have been bundling groups of straws into 10's and 100's and finding efficient ways to count between numbers using units of 1, 10, or 100. Next week students will learn the difference between writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, and unit form. Social Studies This week in Social Studies we learned about the different levels of government. We talked about our national government, our state government, our local government, as well as tribal governments in our country as well. To wrap up this unit, we decided on a problem we wanted to solve/address. After lots of brainstorming and voting, the students decided they wanted to address the issue of littering and polluting and create a mural out of recycled materials. More information to come! Extra Snacks We are starting to run low on extra snacks again. If you're able, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send in some snacks for students (fruit snacks, granola bars, etc.). Thank you to those of you who have already sent snacks in! Games/Tournaments/Performances As I mentioned at Curriculum Night, I LOVE coming to students' games/tournaments/performances. If your student would like me to attend, please send me the location, date, and time of their activity via email or send in their monthly schedule. Reading This week in reading we learned how good readers stop and think about what they're reading. We talked about how if you can't remember what you've read, it's like you haven't read anything at all. Students also gained a new reading tool: Stop and Jots! With Stop and Jots, students stop and think about what they're reading, and then write their idea onto a sticky note and put it in their book to come back to later. Writing This week in writing we learned what makes a good beginning and ending. We studied Owl Moon and noticed things she did in her writing that we could try out in our own. We also tried rereading our stories to check that they made sense. Math This week in math we continued working with measuring using centimeters and meters. We also learned how there are non-standard units of measurement and students even used paper clips to measure objects! We also worked on solving two-step problems. Next week we will start Module 3. Social Studies This week in Social Studies we learned about the Bill of Rights and wrote our own classroom Bill of Rights. The students spent a lot of time brainstorming what should go into our Bill of Rights. Once our Bill of Rights was written out, students signed their names. Ask your student what's in our class Bill of Rights! Extra Snacks We are starting to run low on extra snacks again. If you're able, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send in some snacks for students (fruit snacks, granola bars, etc.). Optional Homework Optional Homework packs have been sent home. The letter on the front of the packet explains how Optional Homework works and I've gone over it with the students as well. As I mentioned in the letter, since the packets use your student's Time for Kids I only have enough packets for each student. Please make sure your student keeps theirs in a safe place, as I do not have extras. If your student has a two family household, have them keep their packet in their purple folder! Games/Tournaments/Performances As I mentioned at Curriculum Night, I LOVE coming to students' games/tournaments/performances.
