Hello everyone,
I hope you are all well and I hope your students have had a chance to enjoy the sunny weather we've been having (while still appropriately social distancing, of course 😊). I'll be switching to sending these emails out on Sundays, for those of you who would like to plan ahead a bit more for the week with your student! ISD 2nd Grade Emergency Elementary Lesson Plans Week 2 Each week the district will be updating the Wakelet with the 2nd Grade Emergency Lesson Plans every Friday with the next week's lesson plans. These really are an incredible resource the district is providing, and have lessons/activities to do with your student that are straight from our 2nd grade curriculum. I will continue to send out the hardcopy each week as an attachment, but if you'd like to access it ahead of time/on your own the Wakelet is the place to go! https://wakelet.com/wake/55a7ef3f-9254-4c60-9e77-23aed0e7b562 Zoom This week our class will be having our very first Zoom session! I know many teachers have been using this with their classrooms with great success. It will be fun to see as many students as possible, even if it's through a computer screen 😊 Our Zoom "meeting" we be on Wednesday at 12PM. I'm hoping to hold one at least once a week. This week Ms. Bryant will be joining us, too! We will be having our weekly sharing, students can share anything they'd like (pets, trophies, favorite books, amazing creations they've made at home recently, etc.). As much as possible, I'd love for students to steer away from just sharing toys or stuffies. I'm not too familiar with Zoom yet so it'll be a learning process for all of us! I will send the link for the meeting again on Wednesday morning. No worries if your student can't make it this week, we will be having another session again soon! Maple Hills E-News Each Wednesday Ms. Tapper will be sending out an E-News. This E-News will include important and encouraging messages from Ms. Tapper, as well as from our other amazing staff, too! Our PE and music teacher, librarian, counselor, student support coach, and reading teacher will include terrific resources and ideas for you to use at home. It will also include important information and announcements from the district. Be sure to read it every Wednesday! Website Update I have added a new section to my website called "At Home Learning Resources". This page has links to all resources that have been sent out (including my initial word doc. that has instructions for accessing your student's logins/accounts), a link to the 2nd Grade Wakelet, as well as a "Quick Links" section that can get you quickly to sites you might be regularly using with your student at home. You can access this new page here: https://sonnelande.weebly.com/at-home-learning-resources.html Additionally, I will be posting my weekly updates under the blog section of my website, however, specific logins/links will be removed. If any links are broken please let me know. I hope you all have a great week and that your families stay happy and healthy! As always, please let me know if you need anything- I'm happy to help in whatever way I can. Warmly, Miss Sonneland

Hi everyone,
I hope you and your families are holding up the best that you all can be at this time. I know so many of you are working with your students, and I greatly appreciate the work you are doing with them (even if it's just reading with them at night!). Please tell your student I miss them very much and hope to see them again soon! ISD 2nd Grade Weekly Resource Our district has been hard at work creating resources families can use each week with their students. They have provided lesson guides and activities for each of our core 2nd grade subjects. They will update it each week with different activities and lesson ideas. Check this link every Monday: https://wakelet.com/wake/55a7ef3f-9254-4c60-9e77-23aed0e7b562 I've attached a physical copy of this week's lesson guide in my latest email. Each week I will check in and send out the next week's lesson guide. This resource is of course optional, you can use or toss whatever portions of it you'd like 😊 Additionally, you can find a full list of Elementary Digital Tools here: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/family/supports/digital-resources/elementary SeeSaw I've had so much fun seeing what your students have been up to over these last few weeks! Your student can login into their personal SeeSaw account using the SeeSaw Class App (this is different from the SeeSaw Family app you use to view your student's work). Once the app is on your student's device, they can scan the QR code I attached to this week's email. I've assigned two different optional "assignments" to your student.
Epic! Books I know many of your students have been enjoying using Epic! Books at home. If your student gets a notification saying they need to request "remote access" to continue accessing Epic for free, please let me know and I will send you an invite to use remote access. You do not need to purchase a subscription to Epic! Food and Technology ISD is able to provide two meals a day (M-F) to families available at multiple pickup sites throughout the district. More information on food services can be found here: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/family/supports/food-and-clothing Additionally if your student needs access to the internet, ISD is lending laptops and/or internet hubs during this time. More information on checking out devices/internet hubs can be found here: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/family/supports/laptops I know lots of information has already been sent out about both of these programs, but if you'd like help getting access to either of these please let me know. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need any kind of help or assistance. I'm here and happy to help you in any way that I can! Warmly, Miss Sonneland Last week in…
Reading Last week in reading we continued practicing reading fluently and with expression. We discussed how good readers match their voice to the tone of the character and to the mood of the story. One clue we looked at frequently was punctuation since that often tells us with which tone to read a story. Writing Last week in writing students continued writing letters about their favorite books. We discussed how we can have strong opinions on characters, plots, lessons, pictures, and more in a story. We learned that good opinion writers state their opinion, and then also give multiple reasons and examples that support their opinion. Math Last week in math we worked with arrays to begin exploring even and odd numbers. Students worked with taking a mixed group of objects and putting them into an even array. We will continue working with even and odd numbers before we wrap up Module 6 this coming week. ISD COVID-19 Safety Measures While there are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Maple Hills or the Issaquah School District, the district is implementing changes in order to protect the safety of students, staff, and volunteers as well as prevent any potential spread of the virus. Until March 20th, volunteers (class volunteers, art docents, WatchDogs, reading coaches, etc.) are not allowed in the building. Parents may still do drop off/pick up and come into the office, but are not allowed in the halls or classrooms until we get further word from the district. Clubs/activities run by outside groups in school facilities are also cancelled (scouts, Young Rembrandts, drama club). Please continue to read ISD and Maple Hills E-News for more updates! Cleanliness in Our Classroom In our classroom we were lucky to have our school nurse, Cassie, come in and do a demonstration on the importance of hand washing. I have been, and will continue, encouraging students to wash their hands after they come in the classroom in the morning, after lunch, and after recess. We also talked about minimizing the spread of germs by not touching our faces too much. If your student has a minor cough or is prone to sneezing, please continue to encourage them to cough or sneeze into their elbows. Lastly, something we talked about in class was how this really isn't something we joke around about at other's expense or to start rumors about others. Thank you for supporting all of this at home as well! Children's Hospital Donation DriveIn conjunction with Kindness Week next week, Student Council is sponsoring a donation drive for Children’s Hospital. Every day next week, we will be collecting donations by grade level. The grade level that collects the most donations will win a free recess. Please see the attached Children’s Hospital Wish List. A hard copy will also be coming home with your child today. If you have any questions about the drive please contact the advisers. [email protected] and [email protected] IOWA Testing We have our final round of HiCAP testing for ISD's Gifted and Talented Program this week! We will be testing March 10th-13th from 9:30-11. Please make sure your student arrives on time, well rested, and ready to test their best. If your student is absent for any of our testing days, they will have to make up the test at another time. Here's to a great week! -Miss Sonneland Dates to Know: March 9th-13th: Maple Hills Kindness Week March 10th-13th: IOWA Testing March 18th: End of Trimester 2, Report Cards go live |
