This week in...
Reading This week in reading we read two festive holiday books: Memoirs of an Elf, and Santa and the Three Bears. Students applied the skills we've learned so far this year, making connections, activating schema, making connections, and making inferences to discuss each text. Next week we will read Jan Brett's The Animal's Santa. Writing This week in writing students worked incredibly hard publishing their writing. They edited, revised, and got to fancy up their books by adding About the Author pages, designing a front and back cover, and some even added glossaries. We wrapped up the unit with our Information Expo today. Students displayed their work on their desks, then got to travel to the other 2nd grade classrooms to learn from other 2nd grade writers. While the published pieces will go into their portfolios that they'll take home at the end of the school year, they got to take home their Expo Tri-Folds and the compliments they got on their writing from other 2nd graders today! Math This week in we continued working with using the chip model and vertical form. For the first time this week, students use the chip model and vertical form to subtract. Students have been doing a great job using the chip model to subtract, and we will continue working on using the vertical form algorithm to help us add and subtract bigger numbers. Science This week in science we continued learning about ecosystems. We looked at many different kinds of ecosystems, and noticed how their locations in relationship to the Tropic of Cancer, the Equator, and the Tropic of Capricorn. We also talked about how ecosystems can change, rapidly or gradually, from natural or man made events. Next week we will have our first in school field trip with Kate Poster who will be talking about changes in ecosystems. Second Step (Social and Emotional Curriculum) This week we learned more about empathy, and practiced recognizing and understanding other people's emotions. Next week we will wrap up our empathy unit with a lesson on compassion. Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leaders of the week is Della! Way to go, Della!
