Reading This week in reading we learned how good readers decide how to read their books and give their book a sneak peak before they read. We also talked about how good readers read more and more and more! Next week we will learn about strategies for reading fluently and figuring out tricky words. Writing This week in writing we began our small moment unit. I've been so impressed by how exuberantly the students have jumped into this unit! We talked about how writers write about things that are meaningful to them. We will be using Owl Moon as our mentor text for this unit, next week we will delve deeper into the craft of our stories. Math This week in math we started Module 2. In this unit we practice measuring with centimeters. We also talked about how to pick an efficient measuring tool for what we're measuring- either a centimeter cube, ruler, or meter stick. We learned how to make accurate estimates using a benchmark measurement- our pinkies are about the width of a centimeter so we've been using those to make our estimates! Social Studies This week in Social Studies we learned what it means to be global, and what our rights and responsibilities are in our school. Next week we will learn a bit more about the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens of the United States. Second Grade Store Each week students are able to spend their Soaring Eagles at our Second Grade Store. If you have any gently loved stuffies, sticker packs, toys, or any other cool things you think students might be interested in- please send them in! Thank you so much to those of you who have already sent items in. Eagle Reader Eagle Reader is an amazing program sponsored by our PTA that supports reading for Maple Hills students. Students/parents can log their daily minutes for the month and earn a free book if they read their goal. Second grade students should read 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week for a total of 300 minutes. Please visit the Eagle Reader page for more information: http://maplehillspta.ourschoolpages.com/Page/Eagle%20Reader/Eagle%20Reader%20Program%20Info PTA Please join our PTA! The PTA helps support Maple Hills and all the students. There are so many fun events set up by the PTA (STEM Night, Art Walk, Fall Dance, Pizza/Bingo, Auction) and I truly appreciate all they do for our school. Reading This week in reading we talked about how good readers make connections to what they're reading. We read My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother and students did a great job making connections to their own lives and to other books. We wrapped up our launching unit with Book Tasting at the Cafe di Sonneland this morning! Students had a great time "sampling" different genres of books. Pictures can be found on SeeSaw (if you're not sure what SeeSaw is/haven't set up an account yet, please email me). Writing This week in writing we learned strategies for spelling tricky words, what to do when a piece is finished, and what it means to revise and edit our writing. Next week we will kick off our Small Moment writing unit. It would be enormously helpful if you could help your student think of a few topics they could write about for the unit- something that has happened to them that gave them a strong feeling is a great place to start (winning a big game, fireworks at Disneyland, etc.). Math This week in math we wrapped up Module 1 by reviewing addition and subtraction strategies for numbers up to 100. We continued working with using Quick 10 drawings to show how we added or subtracted. Next week we will begin Module 2 where students will work with measuring and problem solving. Social Studies This week in Social Studies we learned that a community is a group of people working together. We discussed what it means to be a good citizen in our classroom, our school/community, and our world. We came up with different ideas for ways students can be good citizens in each of those areas. Picture Day Picture Day is on Friday, September 27th. Picture order forms were sent home this week. If your student misplaced theirs or if you need another for any reason, please let me know. Whole class pictures will be taken in March. Second Grade Store Each week students are able to spend their Soaring Eagles at our Second Grade Store. If you have any gently loved stuffies, sticker packs, toys, or any other cool things you think students might be interested in- please send them in! Reading This week in reading we've been learning about the skills good readers use when they're reading. We learned that good readers activate their schema, their mental filing cabinet, in order to make sense of and understand what they're reading. We also learned how to pick "just right" books, and if there are more than 5 words on a page we don't know, that book is too difficult and we won't be able to activate our schema. Writing This week in writing we kicked off our Writer's Workshop with a free-choice writing unit while we get back in the swing of things. Students may write fiction or non-fiction for this unit, but we'll be focusing on writing in complete sentences, strategies for spelling tricky words, and revising and editing. Math This week we started our first math module, Module 1. Module 1 is a review of strategies and concepts students learned in 1st grade, so it's a great way for students to build some math confidence. This week we've been working with number bonds, quick tens, and adding from friendly numbers. Optional Second Snack I know it can be extremely difficult to focus when hungry, so we've added an optional (quick) second snack to our school day. At 1:35, students will have 5 minutes to eat their second snack, if they brought it. As a note- I will only be providing extra snacks for students during our morning snack. Curriculum Night Curriculum Night is Tuesday, September 17th from 6:00-7:00. I will get to tell you all about our curriculum, expectations for this year, volunteering in our classroom, and more! For Curriculum Night, we will start in our room from 6:00-6:30 and then head down to the MPR from 6:30-7:00 to hear from Ms. Tapper. We've had an incredible start to our year so far! It was so lovely to meet so many of you at Meet the Teacher. This week we've spent lots of time getting used to being in school again and reviewing our classroom and school-wide expectations. While not the most exciting of topics, I hope your student still had a fun time getting to know each other, me, and building our classroom community (or at the very least, that they heard some good jokes at joke time)! This week we also used a great resource called YouCubed (https://www.youcubed.org/) to talk about how our brains can grow and change, and how valuable mistakes can be to our learning (if we can recognize the mistake and say, "Okay. How can I fix this?"). It's a great website and I highly encourage you to check it out! Next week we will start officially launching our reading, writing, and math curriculum. I know this is going to be an incredible year! Picture Day Picture Day is on Friday, September 27th. Picture order forms were sent home this week. Curriculum Night Curriculum Night is Tuesday, September 17th from 6:00-7:30. I will get to tell you all about our curriculum, expectations for this year, volunteering in our classroom, and more! I can't WAIT to see you there. In the meantime, I will be sending my "Room 201 Parent Survival Guide" home in your student's purple folder next week.
