Reading This week in reading we read A Bad Case of Stripes and Try A Little Kindness. In reading we've been focusing on being able to identify the major plot points in our stories- mainly the problem, key events, and solution. Writing & Science This week in writing students applied what we've learned through our force and motion experiments into writing information books about force and motion. I've been so impressed by the students' writing, and how they've been able to write like the proper scientists they are! Math This week in math we began our final unit of the year Module 8. We've started our unit by learning about the different attributes of polygons. We looked at 4 different kinds of polygons: Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Pentagons, and Hexagons. Next week we will learn about attributes of shapes like right angles and parallel lines. June Schedule Changes In order to accommodate the 5th graders and their rehearsals for their musical, we will be having Music from 2:00-2:30 on the 4th, 6th, 11th, and 13th instead of our usual 3:10-3:40 time. June Field Trip We will be going on a field trip to the Pacific Science Center on Friday, June 21st. This will be an all day field trip, and I'd love to have as many volunteers as possible! If you are interested, please make sure you have been approved to volunteer for this school year (you can apply here if you haven't already: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/human-resources/volunteers). Have a great weekend! Reading This week in reading we read Abuela and Dreamers. Both of these books feature Spanish speakers and there are many Spanish words in the books. Students had to practice using their inferring skills to figure out the meaning of the foreign words using story clues. Writing & Science This week in writing and science we wrapped up our catapult experiments and then launched into a new experiment using a pull force to move an empty and a filled dump truck down a ramp. Next week students will apply what we've learned about force and motion to writing informational books about force and motion in our everyday lives. Math This week in math we wrapped up Module 7 by using what we know about number lines to create line plots to represent data. Next week we will start Module 8 which focuses on students' understanding of geometry as well as time. Tech Day We filled our class marble jar and the students voted to have another Tech Day! We will be having Tech Day next Thursday, May 30th. Students are allowed to bring in one, small technological device. If your student doesn't have a device to bring in, or you're concerned about a device making it safely to and from school your student is more than welcome to use our class computers or iPads. June Field Trip We will be going on a field trip to the Pacific Science Center on Friday, June 21st. This will be an all day field trip, and I'd love to have as many volunteers as possible! Reading This week in reading we read Cactus Hotel. We learned many interesting facts about the saguaro cactus (like they can grow up to 50 feet tall!). Students practiced their retelling skills and wondering skills by asking further questions about the text. Writing & Science This week in writing and science students planned and executed two more force and motion experiments on their own. We discussed what a simple machine is, and the simple machine used in our experiments has been a ramp. Next week students will be using a different but very exciting simple machine for their lab reports: a catapult! Math This week in math we learned about parts of a number line- endpoints, units/unit lengths, and hash marks. We will continue strengthening students' understanding of number lines next week and using the number lines to add and subtract. June Field Trip We will be going on a field trip to the Pacific Science Center on Friday, June 21st. Permission forms are being sent home today. This will be an all day field trip, and I'd love to have as many volunteers as possible! If you are interested, please make sure you have been approved to volunteer for this school year (you can apply here if you haven't already: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/human-resources/volunteers). May Schedule Changes In order to accommodate the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders taking the SBA this month we have many specialist changes in the month of May. Every Tuesday this month we will have Music at 10:00 (instead of 3:10). Every Thursday this month we will have Music at 10:30 (instead of 3:10). Have a great weekend! Reading This week in reading we read Catina and Houndsley and A Boy and A Jaguar. We talked about how when good readers read aloud they scoop the words together into big phrases rather than reading word by word. We also talked about how good readers stop and thinking deeply about their reading, instead of just trying to race through to the next book! Writing & Science This week in writing we started our brand new writing AND science unit! In this unit students design experiments around force and motion and write lab reports about their findings. We've already written our first lab report as a class, and now students are busily in the middle of planning and running their own experiments answering their own questions. Math This week in math we continued working with problem solving skills using money. We also are revisiting measuring. In the fall students measured using centimeters and meters, now students are practicing measuring in inches and feet. Social Studies This week we wrapped up our social studies unit on the history of the Issaquah area. A highlight of this unit was last week when we got to look at historical artifacts sent to us from the Issaquah History Museum. Also a special thank you to all of you who were interviewed for our final project, the class so enjoyed finding out more about the heritage of different students in our class! May Schedule Changes In order to accommodate the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders taking the SBA this month we have many specialist changes in the month of May. Just so you're aware- Monday, May 13th we will have P.E. at 9:30 (instead of 2:40). Every Tuesday this month we will have Music at 10:00 (instead of 3:10). Every Thursday this month we will have Music at 10:30 (instead of 3:10). Friday, May 17th we will have P.E. at 2:00 (instead of 2:40). Have a great weekend!
