This week in...
Reading and Writing This week in reading and writing we wrapped up our poetry unit! We learned about personification and alliteration as well as mask poems, riddle poems, and poems of address. We had our poetry slam today and the students did such an incredible job being brave and reading their poems for the class. I've uploaded a few pictures from this week to SeeSaw already, but I'll post the rest of the pictures and the full video from the poetry slam later tonight/this weekend. I also had the students take home all their poems (except the one they shared which will go in their portfolio), so be sure to check those out! Math This week in math we looked at groups of objects and used repeated addition sentences to find the total number of objects in a picture. This week we also learned the term "array". We practiced creating arrays that had rows and columns with an equal number in each. The distinction between rows and columns (specifically 2 rows of 3 vs 2 columns of 3), can be a particularly tricky one and will be something we continue to build on. Social Studies Building on our discussion of goods and services from last week, students had an exciting day this week where they got to participate in our classroom marketplace. To start, each student took 20 of their classroom dollars out of their bank account from Della and Colton's fabulous bank. Then they could spend their money at their classmates' businesses. Students had to keep track of their purchases and how much they spent though. While half the students shopped, the other half had to run their business and had to practice making change, and think of ways to get people to buy more of their products. Pictures from the classroom marketplace can been found on SeeSaw! Global Day of Play The 2nd Grade will be participating in Global Day of Play this Wednesday, February 6th. On this day, student can bring some of their favorite brain-stimulating items to school to share, like Legos and play dough. We will take a little bit of time from our day to just let the kids be kids! As a firm supporter of the whole-child, it is important to provide activities that promote critical thinking and play. Please no electronics. Valentine's Day and Friendship Party Information will go home about our class's Valentine policy (NO candy please), along with a list of student names on Monday. If your child is bringing valentines to school to share, please have them bring one for each student in class, 18 total (excluding themselves of course!). Valentines can be brought in on the 11th, 12th, 13th, or 14th. We will be having a party in our classroom to celebrate friendship and have some treats on the 14th as well! More information and sign-ups for the Friendship party to come. Special shoutout to Camryn, Ruby, and Freya for being brave and participating in this year's Variety Show, they did an incredible job and we were all so proud of them! Have a wonderful weekend, Miss Sonneland Dates to Know: February 6th: Global Day of Play February 13th: Twin Day (School Spirit Day)- If you're student doesn't have anyone to twin with, they can wear a black shirt and jeans and twin with me! February 14th: Friendship Party February 18th-22nd: Mid-Winter Break (No school) |
