Reading This week in reading we read Me First!, Big Al, and revisited a story from earlier this year: Erandi's Braids. During reading this week we focused on figuring out the main idea/the central message the author was trying to convey. Writing This week in writing we kicked off a mini grammar boot-camp! Students have had free choice in their writing time, and we have been focusing on writing complete sentences (with a subject and a verb), using capital letters, punctuation, and using our best handwriting. Math This week we learned how to organize data into a picture graph and a bar graph. We also reviewed coins and their values. We will continue working with coins through this unit, practicing counting with coins at home would be a huge benefit for your student! Social Studies This week in Social Studies we started our new unit on the History of Issaquah. The Issaquah District worked with the Snoqualmie tribe to write this curriculum, so we've started our unit by talking about the history of the Snoqualmie tribe in the area. We also talked about how farming and agriculture changed the area and its effects on the indigenous people. Reading This week in reading students used their inferring skills to help them better understand their character, to consider different points of view, and to uncover the moral/lesson of a fairy tale. When we return from break we will continue reading fairy tales and fractured fairy tales and continue using these skills. Writing This week in writing students worked on developing their fractured fairy tales. Students worked on bringing their story to life by using precise, interesting language, adding dialogue, and thinking carefully about the lesson they want their story to teach. When we return from break students will work on publishing and polishing their fractured fairy tales. Math This week in math we continued strengthening our understanding of place value using the chip model and vertical form. We also took some time to look at balancing equations, make sure that both side of our equal sign equal the same value. When we return from break we will begin Module 7.
