Reading This week in reading we learned how good readers visualize what they're reading. Students practiced making mental pictures in their heads as I read them various stories without showing them the pictures. Students had to pay close attention to story clues to make an accurate picture in their mind. Writing This week in writing we wrapped up our grammar unit. We learned about how to use apostrophes in contractions as well as to show possession. Students got to choose their genre for this unit, and I was so impressed by their creativity and writing! We will have our writing celebration next week before we start our new writing unit: Poetry. Math This week in math we began Module 4 which takes up where Module 3 left off. Now students are applying their place value knowledge to addition strategies. This week students learned about the chip model and vertical form, a strategy for adding and subtracting that we will be using for the rest of the year. Science This week in science we learned about different biomes around the world. So far we have studied the tundra, temperate forest, and desert biomes. Next week we will learn about the rainforest and grassland biomes. Optional Homework As many of you noticed, I made a slight error on the due date for November's Optional Homework packet! The final due date for the packet is Wednesday, November 27th. Students can turn it in anytime next week. Field Trip Our field trip to the Pacific Science Center on Friday, December 13th is quickly approaching! Permission forms were sent home this week, please let me know if your student needs a new one. Field Trip Chaperones I've had many people indicate they would like to chaperone our field trip which is so wonderful! In order to chaperone the field trip, you must completed the ISD volunteer application and been approved. This process can take a bit of time, so please submit your application ASAP if you are planning on being a chaperone. If your volunteer application has not been approved by December 13th, you will not be able to attend the field trip. You can find the link to the volunteer application here: https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/human-resources/volunteers If you have not turned in your chaperone form, please make sure your student brings it in by Tuesday, November 26th. Due to space limitations, we most likely will not be able to take very parent that wants to chaperone. Preference will be given to parents who have already filled out and submitted their volunteer application. Student Led Conferences Conferences are December 4th and 5th. There will be no school that day, however your student is invited to attend conferences this year- so please make sure to bring them with you. If you haven't signed up yet there are still slots available, but many have filled up by now please sign up as soon as possible if you haven't already. Reading This week in reading we wrapped up our unit on inferring. This week we practiced inferring the meaning of words from languages we didn't know. We read the book Abuela, which tells the story of an adventure a young girl goes on with her grandma. This book contained lots of Spanish words, and students had to infer to figure out their meaning. Writing This week in writing we continued our grammar boot camp and learned about adjectives, adverbs, and irregular verbs. Next week we will wrap up our conventions unit! Math This week in math we compared numbers using <, >, and =. We also worked on 1 more/1 less, 10 more/10 less, and 100 more/100 less with numbers between 0 and 1,000. Next week we will wrap up Module 3 and begin Module 4 which will continue working on students' understanding of place value concepts. Science This week in science we learned about what an ecosystem and a habitat is. We also learned about how Earth is part of a biosphere. Extra Snacks We are running low on extra snacks again! Please make sure your student comes to school each day with an easy to open, easily accessible snack in their backpack for their morning snack. If you are able to swing by Costco this weekend and send in extra snacks (fruit snacks, granola bars, goldfish, etc.) it would be greatly appreciated! Auction Art Project If you are interested in helping create our class art project for the Maple Hills Auction please let me know. The auction will held in March, so there’s plenty of time to imagine and create the art. For those who have attended in the past, you know that each class enters an art piece that will be sold to the highest bidder. It’s a really fun portion of the evening and a great way to help raise funds for our PTA programs. Conference Sign Ups The Skyward Conference Scheduler is now open! Conferences are December 4th and 5th. There are slots available from 8:00-3:30. Your students ARE invited to this year's conferences. Please make sure to schedule your conference ASAP, as spots tend to fill up quickly. Reading Last week in reading we continued building our inferring skills. We reread Erandi's Braids and made inferences about Erandi based on things she said and did in the story. We also read Chester's Way by Kevin Henkes. Students did a great job making inferences about Chester, his friend Wilson, and their new neighbor Lilly. Ask your student what happened in the story to practice their retelling skills! Writing Last week in writing we learned about the present, past, and future tense of verbs. We also learned about subject/verb agreement and how subjects need to work with their verbs to sound right. We will continue working on these concepts, but encourage students to ask themselves "Does this sound right?" when looking at their own writing. Math Last week in Math we continued using place value disks to represent numbers. We also learned how we can represent numbers with more than 9 ones or 9 tens. For example: 10 tens = 100, 12 tens = 120, 80 ones = 8 tens, and so on. Science Last week we started our first science unit of the year: organisms and ecosystems. First though, we learned about how scientists set up their lab notebooks. We spent time looking at field notebooks of real scientists, and how scientists draw detailed, accurate pictures of what they're observing. Eagle Reader Eagle Reader is an amazing program sponsored by our PTA that supports reading for Maple Hills students. Students/parents can log their daily minutes for the month and earn a free book if they read their goal. Second-grade students should read 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week for a total of 300 minutes. Please visit the Eagle Reader page for more information: http://maplehillspta.ourschoolpages.com/Page/Eagle%20Reader/Eagle%20Reader%20Program%20Info Auction Art Project If you are interested in helping create our class art project for the Maple Hills Auction please let me know. Reading This week in reading we started our inferring unit. We learned that an inference is where we use story clues + our background knowledge/schema to say something about the character or story that the author didn't explicitly say in the text. We practice this new skill by reading What Mary Jo Shared and Erandi's Braids and noticing what the characters did, and what that told us about them. Writing This week in writing we started our Grammar Boot Camp! We will be learning all kinds of important language conventions that good writers should know. This week we reviewed how all sentences have a subject and a predicate, and learned that there are three kinds of sentences: declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory. Math This week in Math we started using place value disks to represent numbers on our place value chart. Students practiced exchanging smaller units for larger units (i.e. 10 ones for 1 ten) as we counted to bigger and bigger numbers. We will continue using place value disks throughout our unit. November/December Sharing November and December Sharing packets were sent home today in your student's purple folder. Next week's sharing will be creating a poster to hang for our Veteran's Day Assembly. In order to make sure that your student's art can get hung up in time, Thursday sharers can share on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday next week.
