Reading This week in reading we read Mary Poppins and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole. We also set some goals for ourselves for our reading over the summer. Students had lots of great ideas like- finish a series, go to the public library once a month, or read in the car/on an airplane if going on trips this summer! Writing This week in writing we finished our beloved comic book unit. Students worked so hard on these, and their published pieces will be coming home with their portfolios next week. We got to share our published comics with our 5th grade buddies on Wednesday, and they had nothing but great things to say about them! Math This week in math we finished our final module of the year! We continued working with telling time on analog clocks. We also talked about A.M. and P.M. and did lots of problem solving with time. I'd encourage your student to keep using math related websites throughout the summer, such as Zearn, Xtramath, or Prodigy. End of the Year Reminders The last day of school is quickly approaching! Because of our snow days this year, the last day of school is Thursday, June 27th. Dismissal is 11:45 (no lunch). All student library books need to be turned in by Wednesday, June 19th. Please make sure to pay all fines and field trip fees by the last day of school. I will be giving the students some end of the year gifts and a class award, if your student won't be here Wednesday and/or Thursday of next week please let me know so I can make sure they get their present before they leave! End of the Year Countdown Each day till the end of the year has a different special activity and/or theme. Special activities this week: Minute to Win It, Extra Recess, 5th Grade Buddy Goodbye, Camp Learn-A-Lot, and our field trip to the Pacific Science Center! The students had SUCH a great time at the science center, and a special thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers! Have a great weekend! Reading This week in reading we reviewed all the different Reading Comprehension Strategies we've learned this year: making connections, visualizing, inferring, wondering, and retelling. We read Meet Yasmin this week and students had to identify which strategy they were using. Writing This week in writing we continued working on our comics. We talked about how good writers use lots of dialogue and how comic book writers use onomatopoeia to bring more action to their writing. Math This week in math we learned about partitioning shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. This led into us learning about telling time on an analog clock. We've only just started working with time, but we talked about the different parts of a clock, and the meaning of quarter past, half past, and a quarter to. Reading This week in reading we read Happy Like Soccer and I Hate English! Students made such great connections to both of these stories. With I Hate English, students had to practice their inferring skills as well as their empathy skills to understand how the main character, Mei Mei, felt about being in America and learning a new language. Writing This week in writing we wrapped up our Force and Motion writing unit. They have done such a great job with this unit, make sure to take a look at the writing that came home this week! In very exciting news, we started the most highly anticipated unit of the year: COMICS! Students are, naturally, already off to a great start with this unit. Math This week in math we learned about different kinds of quadrilaterals: trapezoids, parallelograms, rectangles, squares, and rhombuses. We also talked about the meaning of parallel lines and square corners/right angles. June Schedule Changes In order to accommodate the 5th graders and their rehearsals for their musical, we will be having Music from 2:00-2:30 on the 11th and 13th instead of our usual 3:10-3:40 time.
