Reading This week in reading we began our new unit on Wondering. We read some very interesting non-fiction books, and students made predictions for what they would learn. After reading the books, students took their wondering further and asked questions based on what they had learned from the text. Since we're in the middle of our non-fiction writing unit, we've also been noticing what other writers do to teach their audience about a subject. We will wrap up this non-fiction wondering unit next week. Writing This week in writing we used our work on the writing checklists to set some new stamina and writing goals for ourselves. While this unit will be drawing to an end soon, students have been doing a great job teaching their audiences like experts. Next week students will select a book they would like to have published for our upcoming writing celebration. Math This week in math we launched into Module 4. Module 4 requires students to apply what they learned about place value in Module 3 with addition and subtraction. This unit teaches students many different strategies for addition and subtraction. This week students learned how to use the arrow way and tape diagram to add and subtract. Science This week we kicked off our new Life Science unit! To begin we've been reviewing what students learned last year in 1st grade about seeds and the life cycles of plants. Next week we will begin talking about ecosystems, and specifically how ecosystems change over time. Student Led Conferences Next week we will be having conferences on December 5th and 6th. In 2nd grade, we hold student-led conferences. This is a sweet opportunity for students to share their learning, goals, and achievements with you! We will spend time practicing for conferences in class, so they can share their work with pride at their conference. Conferences are scheduled for 20 minutes, but there's a 10 minute buffer between each in case you'd like to talk with me one on one about your student while your student waits outside the classroom. Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leaders of the week is Camryn! Way to go, Camryn! Here's to a great week and have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! Reading This week in we continued making inferences. We read the story Erandi's Braids, and talked about actions taken by the main character, Erandi, and what those actions tell us about her as a character. Next week we will wrap up our unit on inferring using the book Chester's Way. We'll also be doing a special Reader's Theater on Wednesday. Be sure to check SeeSaw for videos! Writing This week in writing we looked at our new Information writing checklists to reflect on what we do/don't have yet in our writing. Next week we will use these checklists to help us set goals for this unit. Additionally, we are continuing to look at mentor author texts, noticing what others writers do and how we could use that in our own writing. Specifically this week we talked about how non-fiction writers write interesting introductions that grab their reader's attention. Next week we will be working on using descriptive writing to make our writing more interesting. Math This week in math we wrapped up Module 3 by using comparison sentences with <, >, and =. The students did a great job of explaining their math thinking, and were able to not just identify which number was bigger but how they knew it was bigger using place value language. Next week will do a review of all we learned in this module, and then take our Module 3 assessment. Conference Scheduler and Student Led Conferences The Skyward Conference Scheduler is open! Conferences are December 5th and 6th. Please make sure to schedule your conference ASAP (if you haven't already). In 2nd grade, we hold student-led conferences. This is a sweet opportunity for students to share their learning, goals, and achievements with you! Conferences are scheduled for 20 minutes, but there's a 10 minute buffer between each in case you'd like to talk with me one on one about your student while your student waits outside the classroom. PJ/Tech Day This week we filled up our class pom-pom jar which means it's time for our whole class reward! The students voted, and decided they wanted to have a Tech and PJ day this Tuesday, November 20th. (We've had a PJ day each week of November so far (Camp Share a Story, School Spirit Day last week, and now...class reward), but hey! I'm not complaining!) For Tech Day, your student may bring one tablet, DS, or other small technological device to school with them. I will try to grab extra iPads from other teachers and open our classroom computers if your student doesn't have a device or you're concerned a device would not make it to and from school safely with your student. Students will need to keep their devices in their backpacks until we have our technology time. Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leaders of the week are Loa AND Halo! Keep it up, Loa and Halo! Here's to a great week and have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! Reading This week in reading we began our unit on inferring. We read the book, What Mary Jo Shared. Students looked closely at actions Mary Jo took in the story, and then made an inference about what that tells us about her as a person. We will continue working on making inferences in the next two weeks. Writing This week in writing we launched into our new unit: information writing! This unit is already off to a fun start, since there are SO many things students are experts at. As we begin this unit, students will have to think critically about who they're writing their story for, and how the information they need to include might change with their audience. Math This week in math we had a special lesson with Maple Hills' Instructional Coach, Laurie LaVassar. Mrs.LaVassar talked with the students about how to use RDW (read the problem, draw a model, write a number/word sentence) to solve tricky word problems. Students have done a great job applying this to all the word problems we've been working with in math this week. Next week we will round out Module 3 by diving deeper into students' understanding of place value by comparing numbers using less than, greater than, and equal to. Conference Scheduler Now Open The Skyward Conference Scheduler is open! Conferences are December 5th and 6th. There are slots available from 8:00-3:30. Your students ARE invited to this year's conferences. Please make sure to schedule your conference ASAP, as spots will fill up quickly. Events Happening At Maple Hills Next week we have quite a few events happening at Maple Hills. Our Veteran's Day Assembly will be Tuesday, November 13th from 9:30-10:30 in the MPR. Families and veterans are invited. Tuesday, November 13th is also World Kindness Day and we will be celebrating by passing out the Kindness Cards students have worked so hard on these past few weeks. Wednesday, November 14th will be our second school wide spirit day. Students are invited to wear their pajamas to school (no stuffies please)! Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leaders of the week are Loa AND Halo! Keep it up, Loa and Halo! Have a great weekend! Reading This week in reading we read, The Waterfall's Gift, and discussed craft moves we noticed the author made in telling her story. Student's also practiced using their 5 finger retell to talk about the important details from the story. Next week we will start our next reading strategy: inferring. Writing This week we wrapped up our small moment writing unit! The students have done such a wonderful job with this unit, and I've been so proud of all their hard work. This week students dove into working on publishing one story from their collection of small moment narratives. Students then shared these stories at Camp Share-A-Story. Videos of each of your students reading their published small moment story can be found on SeeSaw! The published stories will go in their portfolio which your student will get to share with you at Student Lead Conferences. Next week we will have our small moment writing assessment, it would be a huge help if you could help your student brainstorm a small moment writing topic they could write about for the assessment. Math This week in math we learned how to use an open number line, and started using place value disks to represent numbers. An open number line will be a strategy students will continue to use throughout the year to quickly add and subtract numbers. For now, we're focusing on using it to help us count from one number to another efficiently. Next week students will practice drawing place value disks to quickly represent numbers in their place value charts. Conference Scheduler Now Open The Skyward Conference Scheduler is now open! Conferences are December 5th and 6th. There are slots available from 8:00-3:30. Your students ARE invited to this year's conferences. Please make sure to schedule your conference ASAP, as spots will fill up quickly. Harvest Party, Black and Orange Spirit Day, Buddy STEM Day We had quite the day on Wednesday, and I just wanted to take a minute to thank ALL of our volunteers who helped with the party, and who sent in materials/food/supplies. It was greatly appreciated, and one of our best Harvest Parties yet! Pictures from the party and from our 5th Grade Buddy STEM challenge can be found on SeeSaw. Soaring Eagle Corner This week's leader of the week is Freya! Way to go, Freya! Have a great weekend!
